COLLECTIBLE CARRIERS & CONTAINERS pays tribute to Native artisans from all over the north east, who skillfully crafted the items shown. Private individuals and collectors offered a diversity of objects - containers such as baskets, moccasins and bags representative of authentic Native styles and techniques from the northeastern woodland people. This calendar is dedicated to the late Abenaki Elder, Claudia Chicklas, a long-time board member of the New England Native American Institute (NENAI), whose grandmother, Mary (Watso) Sadoques made many of the baskets shown. In her honor we are using the Abenaki language for the days and months, and vocabulary words.

HERBS, HEALING & HISTORY respects the Native American wealth of herbal healing knowledge transmitted over hundreds of years through initiation, ceremony, and oral tradition. Each month features a beautifully illustrated native herb by the New England Native American Institute’s (NENAI) own artistic Joyce Heywood, with an accounting of each herb's usage. An historical overview narrates the herbal and plant practices and procedures. Interlaced throughout the calendar are colored photos of various herbs in their flowering stages used by Native people. Gladys Tantaquidgeon who lived to be 106 years was a well-known and venerated Mohegan Medicine Woman, herbalist, and anthropologist from Connecticut. In recognition of her we have chosen to use the Mohegan language for the days, months and vocabulary words. For those wishing more information, we have a listing of books and websites pertinent to medicinal herbs.

LIFE SCENES OF EASTERN WOODLAND PEOPLE was inspired by the wonderful artwork of David R. Wagner. We feel very fortunate to have the opportunity of showcasing his paintings that accurately portray various activities in the life of Eastern Woodland People before the Pilgrims arrived. Mr. Wagner’s extensive research of southern New England Native people, places and events makes the calendar not only attractive, but educational as well. Because we’ve chosen to feature his scenes depicting southern New England, we are using the Nipmuc (Nipmuck) language for the moon phases, days and months as well as including a Nipmuc vocabulary page of words relating to activities shown in the calendar.
