Planning Your Site
Assess your Target Market
Planning your site begins with determining who your target market is, and what they want and need from your site. Making
this assessment critically and accurately is essential to the success of your web efforts, and it is this assesment that
will influence your decisions regarding all the elements of your web site.
Tailor features to match the Target Market
Often, people faced with the task of envisioning what their web site should do, what it should feature, are too
heavily influenced by all the bells and whistles they have seen on other sites, often on sites not intended for the same
audience as your site will be. For example, if you are interested in having a site created for your manufacturing business,
and your target market is comprised of engineering professionals, it is likely that they have little time to wait for cool
graphics and catchy tunes to download. They are also more likely to be seeking rapid access to the data they need from you,
and to find that they have the ability to upload their CAD or other design specs directly to you from your web site.
Consider your existing resources
Next, examine your current marketing materials- business cards, brochures, pamphlets and flyers. What of these
are of value to your target audience on the web? A graphical presence on your web site is important, but how important
is a function of what your business is. Graphics are generally necessary, even on a very text-oriented, technical site,
as they provide some eye-relief when properly implemented. Conversely, too many unnecessary graphics can confuse, as well
as causing unnecessary download times.
What do you want your site to do?
Consider your business and what your users would like to be able to do to interface with your services. Do you wish to sell
a product over the web? Online catalogs, product info, orderforms; credit card verification, order confirmation and
related services are all possibilities. Do you perform a service? Online contact forms, client surveys and prequalification
checklists may be of value. Your site can do almost anything you need it to, sometimes the hard part can just be imagining
what you want it to do! At the very least, your site can be an online, full color brochure with unlimited copies,
postage-paid customer response forms and information of value to your potential customers, available world-wide, 24 hours a day,
365 days a year!
